January 2008

THE ROAD FORWARD

Actually, it is a highway, Northwest Highway to be exact!

It is Norwood Park’s “lifeline” and major throughway. It runs through the heart of the community and through its business district. And it needs to be upgraded and returned to the function of a proverbial Main Street.

The process of revitalizing and beautifying the area, described in detail in the Chamber’s Final Report 2007 is a long term goal and it must involve property owners along the Nagle - Harlem stretch. With the arrival of the new year the Chamber will continue to pursue these goals with heightened intensity!

The completion of the Norwood Park historic train station renovation has resulted in a heightened interest in bringing other businesses into the vicinity. A new health club at 6150 NWH will soon open its doors. Prospective business tenants are looking to lease locations on the West side of the Highway. The Chamber has even been contacted by a bank looking to do business in Norwood Park.

The 6100 block, which constitutes the core business area remains, to a large degree, hardly suitable for lease: several stores have remained vacant for a long time and require intense renovation/repairs. They are an obstacle in the revitalization process.

The Chamber renews its appeal to property owners to beautify their places of business. Beatifications can be accomplished with modest means! A fresh coat of paint, new signage, a newly planted tree, flower pots, flower beds with perennials/shrubs.

This spring we plan on installing banners along Northwest Highway and the historic district. Please support this project by purchasing a banner with your name!

The new Norwood Crossing Campus as well as the ZItella complex at 6060 NWH will bring new vibrancy to the train station area. The Chamber is very close to completing a Lease Agreement which will secure an eatery, an ice cream parlor and a floral shop, long awaited in the heart of the neighborhood.

We are proceeding forward, much work is ahead of us!

Norwood Park Train Station

NORWOOD PARK'S HISTORIC TRAIN STATION

The effort to renovate the historic train station began in 1999 with an Illinois First grant of $500.000. The project was spearheaded by the late Bert Schreiber, a long time resident of Norwood Park and its chronicler, whose efforts continued until his passing in August 2005. In 2006 a $250,000 grant allowed for the continuation of the repairs. Currently the Walter Daniels general contractor crew is restoring floors, reinforcing ceiling beams and installing dry wall. All the mechanical system have been completed.

The depot, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, is being rehabbed as a 1907 structure. Designed by the renowned Frost and Granger architects it remains a unique example of the Arts and Crafts style. This simple and inviting structure reflects the unique character of old Norwood, a pastoral community of tree lined and curved streets, which remain almost intact and resembling the days gone a century ago.

The old baggage area of the station was completed in 2003 as a waiting room for commuters. Soon, the remaining space of 1,000 square foot will be renovated.

The Norwood Park Chamber Train Station Foundation who owns the property is a 501 (c3) not for profit Illinois corporation. Efforts will be made to find a good renter for the soon to be completed job.

The recently renovated Norwood Park Station will be a part of the larger plan of revitalizing the community's business area. Two new projects in the station's vicinity will complement the station as well as the Centennial Park surrounding it: two mixed use buildings at 6060 Northwest Highway as well as the Norwood Crossing Campus at 6016 N. Nina.

In a few years the heart of Norwood Park will once again be a busy area, housing new shops and businesses!
